The goal is to produce 2 million electric and hybrid vehicles by around 2030.
The government’s policies.
According to a strategic agreement signed between the French government and the automotive industry on May 6th, France’s automobile sector aims to triple annual sales of electric vehicles by 2027.
The President’s goal
Despite facing fierce competition from Tesla and Chinese car manufacturers, French President Emmanuel Macron has set a goal for the country’s car manufacturers to produce around 2 million electric and hybrid vehicles by around 2030.
French automobile industry
According to a briefing from the French Ministry of Finance, the French automotive industry has agreed to achieve an annual sales target of 800,000 electric vehicles by 2027 under a newly reached mid-term planning agreement, far exceeding the target of 200,000 vehicles in 2022. Additionally, the French automotive industry hopes to increase annual sales of electric light commercial vehicles from 16,500 in 2022 to 100,000 by then.
French automobile industry
French Finance Minister Bruno Le Marie said that it is crucial for France to establish an electric vehicle industry in order to break free from its dependence on oil-producing countries and major car exporting nations. “The choice we must make is whether we want to be a (car) producing country or a consuming country. We have already chosen to become a major producer of electric vehicles.”
Financial allocation
According to a source from the French Ministry of Finance, France has allocated 1.5 billion euros this year to support the production and consumption of electric vehicles through various programs. Currently, nearly 20% of new cars sold in France are electric vehicles, but only 12% of them are manufactured in France.
EV charging station
The agreement between the French government and the French automotive industry also requires the installation of 25,000 fast charging stations by the end of 2027 on major travel routes and in large cities in France, and 400,000 charging stations by 2030.
